Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA, 2005)
AODA, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), was approved by the Province of Ontario on May 10, 2005 and gained Royal Assent on June 13, 2005. AODA Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is a provincial law recognizing the history of discrimination against persons with disabilities in Ontario and requiring “…creation, implementation, and enforcement of standards.”
The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service (O. reg. 427/07)
In order to better assist people with disabilities, organizations, enterprises, and municipalities must adhere to the Customer Service Standard (O. Reg. 429/07). All of these laws are based on the formulation of policies and practices on how to serve people with disabilities, how to comprehend and make provisions for service animals and support individuals, and how to teach employees on how to serve people with disabilities.

People with disabilities and their loved ones have the right to expect their city’s council and every level of the corporation’s management and staff to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate strategies and opportunities that ensure their access to barrier-free programs and services. As a result, the City adheres to the requirements of the Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 when it comes to municipal implementation.
Customer service for people with disabilities is a top priority for the City of Hamilton:
- respects their individuality and dignity
- is incorporated into the service delivery mechanism as much as possible;
- ensures that equal access to goods and services is ensured by making reasonable efforts
- provides equal access to services, programs, and opportunities for people with disabilities in ways that are tailored to their individual needs and self-determination.
